The Wagner Group, which came to prominence during the conflict in Syria, was for nearly ten years a major component of Vladimir Putin's war machine, operating worldwide in the exclusive service of Kremlin policy.

In August 2023, Yevgeny Prigozhin — the man who had been at its origin and who led it — died in a plane crash whose cause was in all likelihood not accidental. A petty criminal who had passed through the Soviet penal system, Prigozhin launched himself into business in the 1990s as the USSR was disintegrating. He made his fortune in catering and gained the favour of Vladimir Putin to such a degree that the press would dub him his "chef."

But his abilities did not stop there. He gradually climbed the social ladder and established himself at the head of Wagner, whose men made a name for themselves through their fighting spirit, but also through their atrocities in Africa and Ukraine.

This work, which traces the history of Wagner, also describes the extraordinary trajectory of a man who was nothing like a condottiere, yet whom circumstances transformed into a warlord and then into a rebel who went so far as to challenge his employer in a coup attempt with an unexpected outcome.
