Published in two volumes, this work provides a comprehensive inventory of the air units stationed in Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia from June 1940 to the summer of 1967. Following a recap of the events of June 1940 and November 1942, the first volume covers the reorganisation of the French Air Force in North Africa as it prepared to resume the fight against Axis forces. Detailed attention is then given to training schools and instruction centres, the early liaison, observation and intervention formations, before opening broadly onto heavy fighter units, night fighters and all-weather fighters to close out this first part. For each formation, the period of activity, missions, the various aircraft types and their periods of use, armament and successive postings are detailed. The second volume is largely devoted to light ground-support aviation, bombing and reconnaissance, transport and helicopters, and support formations. Exhaustive and richly illustrated with nearly 2,500 photographs, it stands as an exceptional reference work on this period of French Air Force history and its commitment on the far side of the Mediterranean. A work of memory, the former aircrew and mechanics of these units will rediscover the operational atmosphere of years spent on African soil.
