At Saint-Cyr l'Ecole, after two and a half centuries of history — from Louis XIV to the Second World War — nothing remained of the École de Saint-Cyr. Two and a half centuries of teaching, instruction and human development. This institution, whose founder hoped would endure as long as France, and France as long as the world, was razed by Allied bombing in 1944. The bombs had taken with them its young ladies, its prytanes and its officer cadets. But in 1966, through the will of General de Gaulle and many others, Saint-Cyr rose from its ashes, faithful to its history, to make way for a collège and then a lycée for the children of military personnel. Bearing a profoundly original educational project with proven results, the Lycée militaire de Saint-Cyr is above all the story of 15,000 pupils with varied, surprising and sometimes even heroic destinies. It is this history that this book sets out to tell.
