Since the 1990s, the armed forces have undergone profound transformation. The evolution of the global strategic context has necessitated a revision of force employment doctrines and a restructuring of their size. The mass army of a people in arms has given way to a professionalised army of reduced format, dependent on an ever more constrained budgetary environment. However, the current size of the professional army no longer allows it to fulfil alone an operational commitment whose demands show no sign of decreasing — quite the contrary.
Once envisaged as reservoirs of officers who would structure mass armies raised to counter an invasion threat, military reserves are now fully employed as reinforcement or substitution forces alongside their regular counterparts, both in France and abroad.
Who are these citizen soldiers? What motivates them? What does their daily life look like? What missions are assigned to them? These are among the questions this work sets out to answer, paying tribute to the little-known French men and women who periodically trade their civilian clothes for a uniform to serve their country.
