.The year 2007 marked the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the creation at Plombières, on 21 July 1857, by Napoleon III and General Faidherbe of the first French unit of Senegalese tirailleurs. On this occasion, the organizers of this international history symposium sought to give it a European dimension by inviting researchers from countries that had enlisted Black soldiers on the African continent to compare their respective practices and attempt to understand this assuredly complex history whose resonance to this day is undeniable. This event was held under the high patronage of His Excellency Abdoulaye Wade, President of Senegal. Contributors to this symposium included: Gilles Aubagnac, Serge Barcellini, Antoine Champeaux, Laurence Demontet, Éric Deroo, Paul Dubrunfaut, Paul Gaujac, Pierre Lang, Sandrine Lemaire, Papa Momar Niang, René Pélissier, Romain H. Rainero, János Riesz, Pierre de Taillac, Iba Der Thiam, Sylvie Thiéblemont-Dollet, Eric Warnant.
