During the nineteenth century, river navigation was still flourishing. The rivers of France and their tributaries were vital arteries for the country's economic development. On the water, skilled and proud men sailed freely. They hauled their craft upriver under sail or let them drift down towards the great ports. They hugged the banks to tow heavy barges, defied the floods, and launched long timber rafts into the current and violent eddies towards the capital. Jean Tambour is one of these men... What a figure is this log-floater from Clamecy, a former conscript of the Napoleonic navy and escaped prisoner from the English hulks! Jean Tambour, returned from the war, will have to fight to reclaim his place on the Great River.
