Book Description On 27 July 1804, in Paris, following deliberation in the Council of State, the emblem of the Empire was chosen: "the displayed Eagle" (after the cockerel, the bee, and the recumbent lion had been set aside). Thus Bonaparte took an imperial flight. His spiritual sons, sharing the ideal of a France born of the Revolution, rallied to his side and more particularly within the Grande Armée. The Sons of the Eagle — that is what they were; they would write some of the great and violent pages of European history. All our characters, drawn from diverse social backgrounds (the nobility of the ancien régime, the third estate…), were forged in the crucible of the new society of the early 19th century. They represent a few examples of those Sons of the Eagle who would compel hatred and admiration alike among the peoples of Europe.
