The Jeep, a small vehicle then largely unknown to the general public, is the most famous example of the approach taken by American manufacturers to transition from wartime propaganda to mass advertising, with a visionary eye on the post-war era. Made famous by a handful of articles, the Jeep spread onto everything and everywhere — letterheads, matchboxes, playing cards — and seemed to be invading America before going on to conquer the world. This phenomenon was amplified by the Willys company, which flooded the press with large-format color advertisements. Willys permanently dominated the communications surrounding its off-road vehicle, notably by enlisting the services of outstanding illustrators. The Jeep quickly became the promotional vehicle of choice for other products, from personnel recruitment to spare parts. Organized by product family, this volume brings together a remarkable collection of illustrations and information that traces an entire era around a small car that very early on became an iconic symbol.
