The Use of the Sector – M. Ozanam
Title: The Use of the Sector – M. Ozanam
Explained and demonstrated in a brief and easy manner, and augmented by a Treatise on the Division of Fields
Paris, Etienne Michallet, 1688. Octavo, 138 pages and 4 plates; contemporary brown calf binding. First edition of Ozanam's text on the sector (proportional compass), illustrated for the first time with an instrument made by Jean Chapotot. Chapotot's sector is engraved with only five calculation lines: chords, solids, equal parts, planes and polygons, whereas the previous editions of Henrion's text on the sector — illustrated with an instrument by Chorez (1618 edition) or by Nicolas Bion (1681 edition) — had four and six lines respectively. While Henrion's text was the standard French reference on the construction and use of the sector from 1618 to 1685, Ozanam's text would serve as the reference until the end of the 18th century. Ozanam began by giving lessons in Lyon, then moved to Paris where he taught mathematics. He published numerous works that brought him fame, including his Récréations mathématiques and his works on applied mathematics. He was elected to the Académie Royale des Sciences in 1701.
