The bomber, or Flight jacket MA-1, is a nylon jacket. It was created for pilots of the US Air Force and Navy. This type of jacket became famous through photographs of American pilots during the Vietnam War. Prior to that, pilots wore leather jackets, but the nylon bomber became the defining aviator jacket.

The first bombers appeared in the early 1950s. They were made of navy blue or olive green nylon and featured a zippered sleeve pocket. They conformed to precise military specifications known as "MIL-J-8279".

The best-known model, the MA-1, replaced the B-15 jacket, which was made of canvas with a fur collar. In 1963, the green lining was replaced with an orange fabric to help locate pilots in distress. The jacket became reversible at that time to meet this need.

Alpha Industries is an American manufacturer of military clothing founded in 1959 in Knoxville, Tennessee. From its inception, the company was a subcontractor for Dobbs Industries, which produced the MA-1 bombers for the US Air Force. That same year, Alpha Industries signed its first contract with the US Department of Defense to produce, among other items, the N-3B parka. In 1963, Alpha Industries signed a new contract and began producing the MA-1 jackets and the N-2B parka directly for the US Air Force.

The company then won the tender for the production of the M-65 combat jackets. It would remain the official supplier for 25 years. It went on to produce numerous other military items through to the early 2000s. The company today markets its military jackets under its Heritage line alongside many other garments for the civilian market.
